San Gimignano: a journey through time along the streets of Tuscan history
A Tuscan jewel, tells a thousand-year history that goes back to the roots of prehistory. Its name first appears on August 30, 929, when Hugh of Provence donated Mount della Torre to the bishop of Volterra. According to legend, the name may derive from the bishop of Modena, who allegedly miraculously defended the town from barbarian invasions.
Since prehistoric times, San Gimignano has been frequented, with permanent settlements emerging in the Archaic Etruscan era. In the Roman period, the area was inhabited, as evidenced by tombs in the historic center. In 998, was a village along the Via Francigena, a fief of the bishop of Volterra.
In the early Middle Ages, San Gimignano became a strategic crossroads on the Via Francigena, welcoming wayfarers on their way to Rome. Even in 998, it was a village under the rule of the bishop of Volterra

However, competition among influential local families led to the construction of numerous towers between the 12th and 14th centuries, which served both as a symbol of power and as a means of defense against possible attacks.
